Enterprise DDI
EfficientIP vs Obelinf
Appliance-based DDI versus SaaS infrastructure documentation
EfficientIP SOLIDserver is an enterprise DDI platform. It is authoritative for DNS and DHCP, it runs on dedicated appliances or virtual instances, and it is delivered as a project rather than a subscription. Obelinf is a SaaS platform for the documentation and inventory side of the network: IP addresses, subnets, VLANs, VRFs, devices, racks, cables, circuits, and topology, with an automatic changelog.
Choose EfficientIP when you need authoritative DDI and DNS security at enterprise scale. Choose Obelinf when you need a maintained, searchable source of truth for the infrastructure itself, without running an appliance estate.
Obelinf brings IPAM, device inventory, network topology, rack management, cable tracking, VLAN/VRF management, and infrastructure audit history into one SaaS platform. Teams maintain it through the interface, the REST API, or CSV import. EfficientIP covers a different job: it is the authoritative service layer for DNS and DHCP as well as IPAM, delivered as appliances and a professional services engagement.
A DDI platform or a documentation platform?
EfficientIP SOLIDserver is a full DDI platform. IPAM is one part of it, alongside authoritative DNS and DHCP, DNS security with DNS Guardian, and high performance DNS with DNS Blast. That breadth is exactly what enterprises buy it for.
Obelinf is not a DDI platform. It does not serve DNS records and it does not hand out DHCP leases. It is the documentation layer: a maintained, auditable record of the addresses, devices, racks, cables, circuits, and connections that make up your infrastructure.
Being clear about that boundary matters, because the two tools are often complementary rather than substitutes. If you need the platform to be authoritative for DNS and DHCP, that is EfficientIP's job. If you need to know where every address and cable lives, that is Obelinf's.
An appliance estate or nothing to deploy.
SOLIDserver deploys as physical or virtual appliances, or as public cloud instances, managed through SmartArchitecture. Rollouts are typically delivered alongside EfficientIP professional services, with a design phase measured in weeks and a configuration and testing phase that can run considerably longer.
Obelinf has no deployment project. You sign up in a browser and start documenting. There is no appliance to size, no high availability pair to design, and no services engagement to schedule.
Address management without the DDI project.
EfficientIP's IPAM is a strong enterprise implementation with rich metadata, multi vendor DNS and DHCP integration, and discovery through modules such as Cloud Observer. It is designed to be the authoritative address record for a large, heterogeneous estate.
If the part you actually need is accurate, team wide IP documentation rather than authoritative DDI, Obelinf covers that directly. Subnet hierarchies with utilization at every level, IPv4 and IPv6, VLANs and VRFs, and a status on every address, all maintained through a modern interface and an API.
Documentation your whole team will use.
EfficientIP is a deep enterprise platform, and reviews consistently note the learning curve and a dense interface that rewards specialists. That depth is appropriate for a DDI control plane that runs core network services.
Obelinf is built for everyday use by the whole team: a command palette jumps to any entity type, search spans devices, IPs, subnets, serial numbers, and asset tags, and results are connected.
Every documentation change, recorded automatically.
EfficientIP records DDI changes and provides change tracking across its modules, which is valuable for the services it manages.
Obelinf records every change to the infrastructure model itself, with the user, timestamp, and field level diffs, and no configuration. That gives compliance and audit work a continuous, immutable trail of who changed what.
A subscription instead of an enterprise project.
SOLIDserver is quote based and lands in the same enterprise range as Infoblox and BlueCat, typically five to six figures per year. Deployment adds a fixed price professional services engagement on top, and options such as DNS security, discovery, and observability are additional line items.
Obelinf is a flat monthly subscription, from free to $299 per month, with no appliance, no support contract, and no services project.
EfficientIP does not publish list prices. The figures above describe the published enterprise range for full DDI platforms generally, not a specific EfficientIP quote. Confirm current pricing and scope with the vendor.
Who should choose EfficientIP?
Choose EfficientIP if:
- You need authoritative DNS and DHCP alongside IPAM
- You need DNS security such as firewalling and threat defense
- You run a large hybrid or multi cloud estate with dedicated DDI specialists
- You can absorb an appliance rollout and a professional services project
Choose Obelinf if:
- You need a maintained source of truth for the infrastructure itself
- You want IPAM connected to devices, racks, cables, circuits, and topology
- You do not need to be authoritative for DNS or DHCP
- You want SaaS with flat pricing and nothing to operate
Moving infrastructure documentation to Obelinf
Export blocks, subnets, addresses, VLANs, and VRFs through the EfficientIP API, and leave your DNS and DHCP services where they are.
Match the exported columns to Obelinf's data model and decide which metadata you want to preserve.
Load the data through the REST API or CSV import, then verify record counts and relationships before relying on it as a source of truth.
If you still need authoritative DNS and DHCP, leave that with EfficientIP or your existing servers, and use Obelinf for the infrastructure record.
Obelinf does not replace an authoritative DDI service. The migration here covers the documentation and inventory layer, not DNS or DHCP serving.
